Abstract

This article discusses the scientific experiments related to optics undertaken by Alhazen, an Arabic scientist and philosopher who lived during the 1st and 2nd centuries. The author describes the since-named Alhazen's Problem, which sought to determine the reflection point in a convex spherical mirror where the object and observer's positions are known. He also comments on Alhazen's process of solving such a problem, which was first postulated in Book V of his treatise on optics. Alhazen's influence on mathematics and philosophy is also considered.
