Abstract

The article focuses on the medieval town of Castelnaudary during the guerre de Cent ans, or Hundred Years' War, with particular focus given to its defense system and military operations. Based on several consular accounts from 1359 to 1447, the author identifies several dispositions used to reinforce surveillance in and out of the city including the use of city and rural night guards and the participation of inhabitants in the city's security. Topics discussed include the soldiers' weapons such as the pavise, or large convex shield, and the crossbow, a list showing equipment and weapons lost during the siege of Bazas, France, under British rule during 1423, and artillery such as the spinquala, a type of crossbow on wheels.
