Abstract

The article looks at the contributions of teaching nuns to the education of young women in Northwestern Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. It discusses the nuns' founding of monasteries in Europe during the 17th century, their creation of structured educational models adapted to women in a closed and feminine environment, and the emergence of secondary education for young women at the end of the 16th century. Topics include the education provided by devoted young women educators such as the ones from the Maison de Sainte-Catherine in Bruxelles, Belgium, and the ambitions of young British educator Mary Ward.
