Abstract
- A case study is offered of the Pedregulho Housing Complex in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the mid-20th century, and its social implications. The architecture, based on the Panopticon building designed by English social theorist Jeremy Bentham, is analyzed along with the French architect Le Corbusier's modernized visions of urban housing. The relationship between the architecture, social power and the tenants is also discussed in the context of the ideas of French philosopher Michel Foucault.
