Abstract

The article profiles British cellist Jacqueline du Pré. She was born in Oxford, England in 1945 and died of multiple sclerosis in 1987. Du Pré started studying to play the cello at the age of 10 under William Pleeth and debuted with a performance at the Wigmore Hall in London at 16 years old. She married Argentine pianist Daniel Barenboim with whom she recorded the Haydn C major and Boccherini cello concertos in 1967. INSET: Jacqueline du Pré's EMI Recordings: Four Surprises & (Re).
