Abstract

This article discusses the use of Ramón Llull, originally a Spanish Franciscan monk during the 13th and 14th centuries, as a name for baptisms on the island of Mallorca, Spain, in 1763. The author examines two such cases in which the name was used against the wishes of the parents of the children being baptized and the subsequent controversies they caused. He also comments on the tensions between lullists and antilullists in Spain at the time, which was centered mainly around Llull's religious philosophy and mysticism.
