Abstract

The article discusses research on the use of serologic screening to evaluate pathogen exposure in various Antarctic seal species including Antarctic fur seals, Weddell seals and Ross seals. It explains how abnormal physiologic conditions can affect blood, enzyme and metabolite concentrations in animals. It describes experimental procedures conducted which include blood sample collection and analysis of serum chemicals and specific antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii and Trichinella.
