Abstract

The article discusses the fruit agribusinesses in Chile and Cuyo, Argentina from 1550 to 1850. The rapid spread of European fruits in these two countries presented challenges in both their uses and preservation, contend the authors. The dehydration of fruits was the main use of preservation due to the lack of refrigeration. The fruits' uses, other than as food, included the production of oils and their use in both carpentry and cabinet-making, according to the authors. The importation, exportation and commercial expansion of the fruit industry was important in preserving the economies in Chile and Argentina, add the authors.
