Abstract

This article discusses the historical legacy of the Italian city of Venice from the fifteenth century to the eighteenth century from the perspective of its relative economic power and influence. Recent archival studies have shown that Venice thrived during this time period, despite several periods of crisis and transformation. Specific attention is given to the role businessmen played in Venetian economy. Other themes of the article include economic trade, the European economy, and divestment.
