Abstract

The article examines the diaries of Jules-Émile Scrive, a late 19th century textile manufacturer in the northern French town of Lille, focusing on the building projects he mentions in passing in the diary that were actually part of the rehabilitation and expansion of Lille in 158. Scrive's fleeting remarks and family records provide unique insights into the architectural and bourgeois living environments of this time and place, how someone of Scrive's social and economic class understood notions of leisure and comfort, and details of family relations in an urban setting.
