Abstract

The article focuses on the history of the pearl rush in Wisconsin in the late 1800s. The discovery of a pearl in a clam from the Sugar River in Albany, Wisconsin in August of 1989 triggered the pearl rush, according to the author. The author emphasizes that the steady rise in the value of pearls between 1893 and 1907 contributed to their increase in demand and the pursuit of them outside of the traditional sources, including the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf. The author discusses various aspects of the rush, including the initial mass migration of pearlers, the disposal practices of the pearlers and the use of the pearls in fine jewelry.
