Abstract

The article discusses the influence of astronomer and mathematician John W. Herschel and geologist Charles Lyell on the scientific work on geology of Charles Darwin. The author focuses on the method of investigation proposed by Darwin in "A Manual of Scientific Inquiry," edited by Herschel in 1849. According to the author in his chapter Darwin established the foundations of a new geology that goes beyond observation and description to become a theoretical science. An overview of the scientific theories of John W. Herschel and Charles Lyell is also included.
