Abstract

This article considers the study and teaching of science by the Catholic Church in Spain under the government of Francisco Franco, known as Francoism, from 1939-1975. It examines the religious aspects of the subjects studied, including creationism, theism, and natural theology. The author explores the relationship between the Church's literal interpretation of the Bible, particularly the Book of Genesis, and the teaching of biology. He also makes note of the disregard of British naturalist Charles Darwin's evolutionary theory regarding human origin.
