Abstract

The article presents a study which investigates if the timing of migratory baleen whales in the spring season is associated to the timing of the phytoplankton spring bloom. The study conducts a four-year observations of the whale at the Azores with the use of satellite data on ocean chlorophyll concentration. Results support the theory that baleen whales follow the secondary production of the North Atlantic spring bloom with the mid-latitude areas such as the Azores as hunting areas.
