Abstract

Christmas Island: Almost two-thirds of this remote Australian territory - "the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean" - is a national park, in part to preserve the burrows of some 47 million Christmas Island red crabs. In early winter they create a giant scarlet swath as they cross the island to lay eggs in the ocean, then return inland. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
