Abstract

The results of the study on patients and surgical nursing staff in Spain are presented. This study is the second part of a project supported by the European Commission with the participation of the following countries in addition to Spain: Finland, Germany, Great Britain (Scotland) and Greece. The aim of this comparative, multicultural, multicenter study was to describe and analyze the perceptions of the patients and nurses on the respect given by nursing staff with regard to the rights of autonomy and informed consent of the patients admitted to surgical hospitalization wards. The sample included 173 patients and 233 nurses. The data were collected from six university and/or general hospitals in Spain with a structured questionnaire specially designed for this study in which the data has been analyzed from both the judicial and ethical points of view. The statistical results showed significant differences in the history and in the perceptions between the patients and the nurses with respect to the nursing interventions involving autonomy and informed consent. The first article of the study on material care was published in volume 11, number 5 of ENFERMERÍA CLÍNICA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
