Looking Back to the Future: Historical Polycultures in Central Italy.

The article provides an historical background on the polyculture system in central Italy. It describes the Tuscany and Umbria landscapes as a web of polycultures, predominantly the mixed farming or polycultural agriculture. Some reasons on the popularity of the mixed farming system are sharecropping and resistance to disease. A discussion on the period that traditional polyculture lasted is provided.
