The article discusses the heritage, nature, and place within the discipline of history of the linguistic turn, major development within western philosophy during the twentieth century, with particular focus given to the contribution made to the debate by groundbreaking book "Probing the Limits of Representation," edited by Saul Friedlander. Themes discussed include the consequences of postmodern relativism, the history of western philosophy during the twentieth century, and the study and teaching of history, as well as the work of historians.
