Abstract

This article discusses the diplomatic position of Secretary of State and it's functions, history, and occupants under the French Monarch King Louis the XIV. It was a position of considerable power and political influence under the King, and the history of the holders of the office is examined against the backdrop of the extensive influence that they were able to effect on the decisions made about policy. This extended not only to foreign diplomacy but also in all aspects of the King's decision making, acting in their role as one of his closest advisers.
