Abstract

The article discusses a study investigating the relationships between erythrocyte glutathione (GSH) concentrations and fleece characteristics and yields in Krayaka and Chios x Karayaka crossbred (Bafra) sheep. It was found that shearing has induced a positive effect on the erythrocyte GSH contents, slightly but not higher erythrocyte GSH contents, and higher staple length, fleece yields, greasy and clean fleece in the Karayaka sheep than in the Bafra sheep, and a positive correlation was observed between the biochemical parameter and the fleece yield. It is suggested that the erythrocyte GSH content would be considered as a marker of high fleece production in sheep.
