Abstract

Chapter 7 of the book "Sensuous Surfaces: The Decorative Object in Early Modern China," by Jonathan Hay is presented. It discusses the meaning and importance of illusionistic depiction of decoration in Ming and Qing dynasties in China. The author mentions that depiction continued to be as important as a surfacescape resource during the Ming-Qing periods and that during these dynasties, decorative arts are set out to reflect social status by transposing the self-referential approach to depiction.
