FONTES CENSITÁRIAS BRASILEIRAS E POSSE DE CATIVOS NA DÉCADA DE 1870.

The article presents demographic information for the slave population in Brazil in the decade of 1870. The author uses various sources, most importantly the mandatory registration of slaves which was carried out in 1872-1873 after the enactment in 1871 of the Law of the Free Womb. He also considers census information regarding slave ownership, the distribution of slaves by region and the type of activities for which they were employed. The author notes the importance of small and medium agricultural operations and large sugar and coffee plantations.
