Abstract

The article explores the plays of Irish playwright Brian Friel that were composed exclusively for Field Day Theatre Co. in Northern Ireland. It discusses the ambivalence surrounding issues of identity that can be observed in the drama of Friel, It also mentions the shift established by Friel away from the oppositional politics in "Translations" to a willful acceptance of the concept of hybridity in "Making History" and to a parody of the Irish cult of authenticity in "The Communication Cord."
