Abstract

The article discusses the study conducted by J. Thomsen and colleagues about the calcifying marine invertebrates (CMI) in the naturally-carbon-dioxide (CO2)-enriched Kiel Fjord located in the Western Baltic Sea. The researchers found that blue mussels from the site can sustain control rates of somatic and shell growth at a partial pressure of CO2 of 1400 parts per million. They also observed that there is no causal association between the acid-base status and metabolic depression in CMI at high levels of ocean acidification.
