Abstract

The article discusses the 17th century appointment of the title of marquis to José de la Puente y Peña, a resident of New Spain, and his benevolent actions after he received the title. The author asserts that this appointment represents the shift from the cultural importance of inherited merit to personal merit during the century of enlightenment. The article also discusses de la Puente's use of capital accumulated from commercial activity to support the Spanish crown, as well as the Spanish missions to California and the protective work by the Jesuit order. Also explained are the requirements de la Puente met to attain the title of marquis, including previous noble status, personal merit and supererogation.
