Abstract

The author discusses a cable from Robert P. Jackson, U.S. charge d'affairs in the U.S. embassy in Morocco, who provided analysis regarding the conflict over Moroccan-occupied Western Sahara. Jackson asserted that the independence struggle was created by Algeria. According to the author, in his analysis, Jackson ignored years of popular resistance and Sahrawi nationalism which pre-dated Algeria's support for the nationalist Polisario Front. Jackson based his claim on Polisario's failure to control Sahrawi-populated areas of southern Morocco.
