Abstract

A biography of Frederick Wellington Ayer, founder of the Eastern Manufacturing Company of Brewer, Maine, is presented. It discusses his purchase of a sawmill and his construction a pulp mill, a paper-making plant, and a rag mill. The author argues that Ayer embodies an early twentieth century shift from lumbering to pulp and paper production. Ayer's son, Frederick Rollins Ayer, became president of the company after his father's retirement.
