Abstract

The article provides information on the Akita, a member of the spitz family of dogs which originated on the island of Honshu in Akita Prefecture, Japan. Typical features of the Akita include a wedge-shaped head, a thick double coat and a large curled tail. The Akita breed was declared a national monument by the Japanese government in 1931. The Akita is described as aloof, intelligent and independent, possessing a well-developed guarding instinct and a tendency to take the lead with other dogs. Tips on training an Akita are presented.
