Abstract

In our study we examined groundwater wells in 5 lowland settlements in different environments. The variations were partly due to the different stages of development of the sewage system. The settlements also varied for the level of the groundwater and water permeability of the soils. The numbers of the inhabitants were between 1000 and 4000 in the settlements studied. During our research we examined how the variations were manifested in the water quality of the groundwater wells. We studied the following parameters of water quality: pH, electrical conductivity, ammonium- nitrite-, nitrate and ortophosphate concentrations. We detected that the properties of the water in groundwater wells were extremely unfavourable in every studied settlement, because we found that the concentrations exceeded the hygienic limit values several times for almost every water quality parameter. In the extent of the pollution there were certainly differences both within and between settlements. In general the wells in which the water-table lies near the surface and those which were near to some kinds of pollution sources, like a non-insulated septic tank or a manure heap, etc. were the most polluted. We determined that most of the examined wells could not be used for watering animals, because it could cause serious animal health problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
