Abstract

The neighborhood of Long Island City in the borough of Queens sits directly across the East River from the island of Manhattan. In the last decade and a half, Long Island City witnessed a redevelopment project intended to draw in higher income residents. Long Island City remains ethnoracially segregated. I use U.S. Census data to present the ethnoracial composition of Long Island City by zip code. This paper describes the neighborhoods that make up Long Island City in historical and sociological perspective. I then explain when, how, and why Long Island City grew. The paper concludes with social observation field notes to function as a guided walking tour through the many neighborhoods that make up Long Island City. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
