Abstract

The article focuses on 18<superscript>th</superscript> century Spanish colonial public prosecutor (fiscal, in Spanish) Victorián de Villava, his political-economic critique of forced labor in the Spanish colonies and his influence on early 19<superscript>th</superscript> century Spanish legal reforms. The author considers Villava's experience as a magistrate in the Audiencia of Charcas, analyzes his written critique of the mita (indentured labor) in Potosí, Viceroyalty of Perú and discusses his book "Apuntes para una reforma de España."
