Abstract
- This article presents a review of Kobayashi Seiji’s book on the Date clan of northern Honshu, Japan, focusing on how this clan and others made the transition from being shugo daimyo, or military governors, to Sengoku daimyo, or “warlords,” during the turbulent 16th-century in Japan. The reviewer notes that this massive work, conducted by a scholar who studied the Date family throughout his career, creates a detailed portrait of how one family adapted to life through the Sengoku period and into the more stable era when the Tokugawa clan took control of the nation.
