Abstract

The article discusses the reception afforded an 1872-1874 Austro-Hungarian polar expedition to explore the waters and currents east of Novaja Zemlya and perhaps discover a Northwest Passage. The scientific aims of the expeditions are viewed as intertwined with imperial motives for overseas colonies and distraction from internal state conflicts. The popular greeting of and celebrations for the expedition returnees in Vienna, Austria, and other cities of the monarchy are described, as are reactions to the expedition's discoveries of new polar lands and scientific knowledge of the arctic region.
