Abstract
- The article discusses the papers of U.S. Senator and Secretary of the Navy William E. Chandler acquired by the New Hampshire Historical Society. It examines the U.S. Republican Party in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and comments on topics of Chandler's correspondence, including his campaign for U.S. Senate and political patronage. His views on civil rights, railroads, and temperance and his ownership of the newspapers the the "Statesman" and the "Concord Monitor" are discussed. The author also provides an inventory of Chandler's paper.
