Measuring social structure in the past.

The article explores social structure and the historical measurement of social stratification. The author reflects on classificatory schemes employing data related to occupational titles, social mobility, and product classification. Emphasis is given to research that utilizes occupational data from a database of Dutch marriage records in order to examine the intercompatabilty of the Historical International Social Class Scheme (HISCLASS), the Social Power Scheme (SOCPO), and the Historical Camsis (Social Interaction and Stratification Scale) (HIS-CAM) with contemporary measures of class and occupational stratification.
