Abstract
- The article presents information on writer Julia Alvarez. Her novel, "How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents," won the Josephine Miles PEN Award in 1991. Sense of dislocation experienced by her in emigrating to the U.S. and leaving behind her extended family were major factors in Alvarez's development as a writer. Process of Americanization, gender issues, generational divide, politics, class and race issues, and religion and superstition were major themes of her writings.
