Abstract

The article focuses on Baker or Modoc cypress (Cupressus bakeri), one species of New World cypress which has been noted because of its tolerance to both extreme heat and extreme cold. It says that the largest single population of this species occurs relatively during the lava flow in Shasta County in northeastern California. It says that though Baker cypress can tolerate heat and cold, it cannot tolerate shade, and that it requires fire to be able to shed its seeds.
