Abstract

The article discusses the social and religious history of Huguenot refugees in New York during the colonial era. It describes Huguenot interactions with Native American Indians during settlement negotiations, the relationship between French Huguenot immigrants and Dutch Calvinist Walloon immigrants, and the effect of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes on Protestant emigration from France to colonial America. Other subjects under discussion include the founding of New Paltz in the Hudson River Valley, the process of acculturation and assimilation of the Huguenots to American colonial society, and the ways in which the Huguenots maintained their linguistic and religious identity.
