Abstract

The article focuses on the commitment of the European Union (EU) and its Member States to achieve a 20% share of renewable energy in the final energy consumption in Europe by 2020. The "Study of the Potential of Solar Thermal in Europe" investigates the growth originating from solar energy. It shows that the solar thermal sector will consist of 470,000 full-time jobs including production, engineering, trade and installation of solar thermal systems from 2006-2020. It points out that the solar thermal contribution to the long-term final energy demand will be limited if the focus remains on the solar thermal systems for domestic hot water preparation.
