An interview with Jairnilson Silva Paim, a Federal University of Bahia in Brazil, is presented. Paim explains the extent to which the principles of integrality, universality, equity and social participation that are expressed in the Unified Health System (UHS) are fulfilled. He cites the areas of UHS that have the greatest advances and problems. He also says that UHS is the only institutional and sectorial dimension of a social reform, that is, the Brazilian Sanitary Reform.
