Abstract

The article discusses the formation and impact of several peace groups and committees in various neighborhoods in Belfast, Northern Ireland during the violent uprisings of the summer of 1969. It is stressed that these organizations allowed many of the residents of Belfast, outside of the areas of violence in Hooker Street and Unity Flats, to remain peaceful. The Catholic/Protestant Peace Corps in Northern Belfast patrolled the area and advised people to stay off the streets during the riots of August 1969. The methods by which these groups kept disorder from spreading across the city through the use of daily new-sheets, organized street patrols, and the maintenance of a 24-hour incident telephone line are described.
