Abstract
- An encyclopedia entry for Helene Gans, a labor and consumer rights activist, is presented. Gans was born on December 27, 1893, and graduated from the University of Chicago in Illinois, in 1914. Her paper "Cut-Rate Wages" that she wrote in 1932 helped influence the New York State legislature to enact its first minimum-wage law in October 1938. It states that she and her husband Leonard S. Gans had agreed that religion would not play a role in their lives.
