Abstract
- The author focuses on the relative lack of information on slavery in literature and museums in Madeira. He states that most Madeiran guide-books mention slavery but few talk about where the slaves originated, which includes North Africans, sub-Saharan Africans, Guanches from the Canary Islands, and Native Americans. He mentions that few books concerning Madeira's wine industry talk about the connection between the slave trade and British wine companies. He comments on the links between Madeira and Portuguese colonies in Asia and the lack of information on Asians who came to Madeira. He talks about Sarah Lee Bowdich, the first recorded white woman who wrote an account of her travels in West Africa and Madeira and on Sarah Forbes-Davies, an African who was the god-daughter of Queen Victoria.
