Abstract

A biography of poet Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson is presented. She was born in 1737 in Philadelphia, New Jersey. A journal she kept when she was sent to England in 1764, says the author, made her a local writer upon her return to Pennsylvania. She circulated her manuscripts to friends like Nathaniel Evans and Hannah Griffitts and occasionally published them in local papers using the pseudonym "Laura." Strongly influenced by English heroic verse, her poems tell much about her personal experiences. Her works include "Il Pensoroso: or the Deserted Wife."
