This article discusses the way in which buildings are both classified and inscribed onto the list of historical monuments in France. To do this, the criterion set out by the "Commission régionale de protection du partimonine et des sites" is examined. Some of the main aspects looked at by the commission are the age of the structure, its aesthetic, and its the importance to French history.
