Abstract

Paper brings in to focus the composition of hospital waste at Faridabad as a case study, in order to achieve the sustainable waste management with heat recovery options. There are more than 234 clinics/ hospitals and having more than 2400 beds in Faridabad. These units were generating 3600 kg / day as hospital waste and 800 kg -1600 kg as incineration and autoclave waste which is disposed through Common Waste Treatment Facility (CWTF) at Faridabad. The solid waste from the hospitals in Faridabad consists of bandages, linen and other infectious waste (15-25%), plastics (5-10%), disposable syringes (0.5-1.5%), glass (3-8%) and other general wastes including food (25-55%). Paper compares composition of hospital waste in India as well as in other countries. Correlation coefficient is also determined between total waste and infectious waste. Hospital, medical and infectious waste is misnomer, which is well defined and differentiated. Infectious and hazardous waste is about 5-25 % of total hospital waste, which was segregated at source. Correlation coefficient between infectious total hospital wastes is also computed. Paper summarizes the results of the field investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
