Abstract

The article provides various information on South Carolina's official state reptile, the loggerhead sea turtle. The upper shell or carapace is reddish brown which provides a good camouflage in its pluff-mud habitat and both its forelegs and hind legs cease in flattened flippers. Turtle hatchlings start life measuring about two inches long and large adults can weigh up to 350 pounds. In 2008, South Carolina recorded an estimated 4,500 nests, the seventh highest number since 1980.
