Abstract

The article focuses on the history of the Lines of Torres Vedras, a line of forts built to defend Lisbon, Portugal during the Peninsular War. It states that the origins of the Lines come from a survey and proposals made by Portuguese army engineer Major Jose Maria das Neves Costa, but it was Arthur Wellesley, Viscount Wellington, who ordered its construction. The reason behind the construction of military roads to the rear of the Lines is cited. The article also talks about the role of the English Heritage in restoring the Lines.
