Abstract

The article discusses whether spirituality influences various aspects of contemporary art. It is stated that many abstract arts of the past 30 years have been governed by materialistic philosophy, Romantic individualism, and formalist concerns. It says that sacredness is a rare phenomenon, little cultivated in art schools or discussed in artists' circles. Several artists are observed as saying that absorption in their work offers a metaphoric, equivalent to religious experience.
