CHAPTER 12: For They Are Us.

Chapter 12 of the book "The Children Hurricane Katrina Left Behind: Schooling Context, Professional Preparation, and Community Politics" is presented. It narrates the experiences of the volunteers of Project Backpack as they immerse themselves in the communities affected by Hurricane Katrina and Rita. It notes the repeated pleas of those affected for simple tools with which to rebuild their lives. It challenges educators to educate people in building communities and to resurrect the notion of schools as symbols of reestablishing communities.
